Abstract

Assessing girls and women for Autism

In this paper, we will present our experience of assessing (and offering psychological therapies to) women and girls in the Tavistock Autism and Learning Disability Team.

Developmental history assessments and the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule – 2) have been standardised with majority male populations. We would like to share the additional assessment components that we have found helpful.

We will think about camouflaging, assessing areas of increased vulnerability for Autistic women and girls (e.g. experiences of bullying or abuse) and ensuring that formulation meetings take account of the tendency for women to present with fewer restricted and repetitive behaviours.

We will share how our experience of offering psychological therapy to Autistic women and girls has influenced our approach to assessments.
