Abstract

Neurodivergent Ingenuity and Creative Expression within the Disciplines of Performance and Creative Writing.

My research is interdisciplinary and explores ideas of self. It reflects upon how neurodivergent people view themselves in respect to others and the world around them, drawing attention to the ways they express and view themselves. It suggests that these perceptions can fuel, drip, and transcend into neurodivergent creativity and creative pursuits. My research proposes the existence of neurodivergent literature and performative aesthetics, requiring their own neurodivergent critical theory and practice. Although this research treats and understands every neurodivergent journey as unique, it also proposes a number of factors which could potentially lead to similarities in creative processes and output. I myself identify as a neurodivergent creative; in support of this research, I have developed a novel and a short performance piece that utilise some of the linguistic aesthetics identified as reflective of ND/MH creativity. My creative work aims to demonstrate how elements of neurodivergent literature and performance challenge or transcend traditional boundaries.
