Abstract

Trigger Warning: Sex education, Autistic girls and Harm Prevention

In this paper I will explore the challenge of empowering Autistic girls with resilience and self-advocacy life skills whilst remaining empathetic to their emotional and sensory needs.

Too often Autistic girls receive inadequate relationships and sex education (RSE). They are often infantilised, marginalised in small and closed educational settings or the education that is provided does not meet their needs, with feelings of anxiety and discomfort preventing them from learning effectively. This leaves them vulnerable to abuse and exploitation.

I will draw on my experience developing and facilitating Peer Productions’ Generation Girls drama programme, which is designed to empower Autistic girls and girls with learning disabilities reducing their risk of sexual exploitation. I will outline some of the ethical considerations and offer some practical approaches to designing accessible and meaningful RSE which can build confidence, self-esteem and resilience.
